truce

Temporary combat halt

A truce is a temporary cessation of fighting between opposing forces, usually by agreement.

Unlike a peace treaty, a truce implies hostilities may resume: The warring factions called a truce to allow humanitarian aid through.

The word extends to any pause in conflict or competition: Let's call a truce and finish dinner in peace.
