Gallipoli

Turkish peninsula battle

Gallipoli is a peninsula in northwestern Turkey, site of a disastrous Allied military campaign in 1915–16 during World War I.

The failed attempt to secure a sea route to Russia cost hundreds of thousands of casualties and holds particular significance in Australian and New Zealand national memory—ANZAC Day commemorates troops who fought there.

His grandfather died at Gallipoli.
