Verdun
1916 battle site
Verdun is a city in northeastern France, site of one of the longest and bloodiest battles of World War I.
The Battle of Verdun (1916) lasted nearly ten months and became synonymous with the senseless carnage of trench warfare, killing hundreds of thousands on both sides.
The name evokes futile attrition and horrific loss: Verdun was a meat grinder that consumed an entire generation.
