over-the-top

Way too much

Over-the-top describes something excessive, exaggerated, or extravagant beyond reasonable limits.

The phrase comes from World War I, when soldiers went "over the top" of their trenches to attack—an extreme act.

Now it characterizes performances, decorations, reactions, or behavior that push past restraint: The wedding was completely over-the-top, with ice sculptures and live swans.

Often abbreviated OTT in British usage.
