Ypres
Flanders Fields city
Ypres is a city in western Belgium, site of three major battles during World War I.
The name evokes the horror of trench warfare—poison gas was first used extensively there, and hundreds of thousands died in the surrounding mud.
British soldiers called it "Wipers," an anglicization that stuck: My grandfather fought at Ypres.
