Hindenburg

Burning blimp disaster

Hindenburg refers to two related German historical figures: Paul von Hindenburg, the military commander and president of the Weimar Republic who appointed Hitler chancellor in 1933, and the *Hindenburg*, the German airship that dramatically caught fire while landing in New Jersey in 1937.

The disaster, captured on film and radio, effectively ended the era of passenger airships.

The Hindenburg now evokes spectacular failure or catastrophic collapse: The product launch was a Hindenburg.
