Appalachians
Old American mountains
The Appalachians are a mountain range extending roughly 1,500 miles along the eastern side of North America, from Alabama to Maine.
Old and heavily eroded, they lack the dramatic peaks of younger ranges but defined early American geography—the original barrier to westward expansion.
The term also refers to the people of this region, particularly those in the central and southern highlands, whose culture is marked by Scots-Irish heritage, traditional music, and distinctive dialect.
He came from generations of Appalachians who never left the hollers.
