moonshine

Backwoods still product

Moonshine is illegally distilled liquor, especially whiskey made in homemade stills to avoid taxation.

The term evokes Appalachian tradition and Prohibition-era bootlegging: His grandfather used to run moonshine through the mountains.

Moonshine also means foolish talk or nonsense: That's pure moonshine.

The literal sense—light from the moon—is the oldest but least common today.
