New Deal

Thirties economic overhaul

The New Deal was President Franklin D.

Roosevelt's program of economic reforms and relief measures enacted during the 1930s to combat the Great Depression.

It created Social Security, regulated banking, and established public works programs.

The term now evokes large-scale government intervention: Some called the climate legislation a Green New Deal. (Lowercase new deal is any fresh arrangement.)
