banshees
Irish death heralds
Banshees is the plural of banshee, a female spirit in Irish and Scottish folklore whose wailing warns of an approaching death in a family.
The shriek itself is sometimes called a banshee: The wind made a banshee sound through the trees.
Figuratively, anything that screams or wails may be compared to a banshee: She came at him screaming like a banshee.
