Balds are naturally treeless mountaintop meadows, found especially in the southern Appalachians.

These grass- or heath-covered summits remain open despite being below the tree line, for reasons ecologists still debate.

We hiked up to the balds for the view.

The term also serves as the plural of bald—a person without hair, or an instance of baldness.
