Ardennes

Belgian forest region

The Ardennes is a heavily forested, hilly region spanning parts of Belgium, Luxembourg, and France.

The terrain made it strategically significant in both World Wars—German forces advanced through it in 1914 and again in 1940, and it was the site of the Battle of the Bulge in 1944–45.

The German offensive through the Ardennes caught the Allies off guard.
