salamanders
Tailed wet-skinned amphibians
Salamanders are amphibians with slender bodies, moist skin, and long tails that they retain throughout their lives, distinguishing them from frogs and toads.
Most live in damp environments near water, though some are fully aquatic and others fully terrestrial.
In mythology and folklore, salamanders were believed to be fire spirits capable of living in flames, a notion that arose from the creatures emerging from logs thrown on fires.
We found salamanders under rocks near the creek.
