dulcimer

Appalachian folk instrument

A dulcimer is a stringed musical instrument.

The hammered dulcimer has wire strings stretched over a trapezoidal sounding board and is played by striking with small mallets.

The Appalachian or mountain dulcimer is an hourglass-shaped fretted instrument held across the lap and plucked or strummed: She learned to play dulcimer from her grandmother in the hollers of eastern Kentucky.
