hemlocks

Socrates' fatal drink

Hemlocks are coniferous evergreen trees with short needles and small cones, native to North America and Asia.

Hemlock also refers to a poisonous plant in the carrot family—the one famously used to execute Socrates.

The two plants are unrelated; the tree was named for the similar smell of its crushed foliage.

The cabin was shaded by towering hemlocks.
