white-tailed deer

Flagging woodland browser

A white-tailed deer is a common North American deer species, named for the white underside of its tail, which it raises as an alarm signal when fleeing.

Also called whitetail.

The species ranges from Canada to South America and is the most widely distributed wild ungulate in the Americas: Hunters pursue white-tailed deer across much of the eastern United States.
