land grants
Government property transfers
Land grants are parcels of government-owned land given to individuals, corporations, or institutions, typically to encourage settlement, development, or specific purposes.
The term appears most often in American history: railroad companies received vast land grants to build transcontinental lines, and land-grant colleges were established under the Morrill Act to teach agriculture and engineering.
The university began as a land-grant institution in 1862.
