Great Smoky Mountains
Tennessee-Carolina highlands
A mountain range straddling the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, part of the Appalachian chain.
The name comes from the bluish haze that often shrouds the peaks—natural fog mixed with volatile organic compounds released by dense forests.
The range includes Clingmans Dome, the highest point in Tennessee.
Most of the area is preserved as Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited national park in the United States.
