wind up

Finish, or begin

Wind up has two clusters of meaning.

One involves tightening or preparation: you wind up a clock, wind up a toy, or wind up before throwing a pitch.

The other involves ending or arriving at a state: How did we wind up here? , The company wound up bankrupt.

In British slang, to wind someone up is to tease or provoke them: He's just winding you up.
