rewind

Return to start

Rewind means to wind backward—returning tape, film, or other spooled media to an earlier point.

With cassettes and VHS, you had to rewind before returning a rental.

Digital media eliminated the mechanism but kept the word: streaming services still have rewind buttons.

Figuratively, to rewind is to revisit something from the beginning: Let me rewind and explain how we got here.
