billow

Sail catches wind

A billow is a large, rolling wave or surge, especially of the sea.

The word extends to anything that swells and rolls similarly: billows of smoke, billows of fabric.

As a verb, to billow is to swell outward with air or movement: The curtains billowed in the wind, Her dress billowed as she walked.
