chinook
Rockies' warming breath
A chinook is a warm, dry wind that blows down the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains, capable of raising temperatures dramatically in winter: A chinook came through and melted a foot of snow overnight.
The word also refers to a type of large Pacific salmon, prized by sport fishers and commercially important. (Capitalized Chinook refers to the Indigenous people or the military helicopter.)
