vaquero
Spanish cattle herder
A vaquero is a cowboy or cattle herder, specifically in the Spanish and Mexican ranching tradition.
The term predates the American cowboy—vaqueros developed the horsemanship, roping techniques, and cattle-driving methods that Anglo ranchers later adopted.
The word remains current in the American Southwest: The vaqueros drove the herd north from Sonora.
