mustang

Free plains horse

A mustang is a free-roaming horse of the American West, descended from horses brought by Spanish colonizers.

Though often called wild, mustangs are technically feral—domestic animals gone wild rather than a truly wild species.

The word evokes rugged independence and untamed spirit: He had a mustang's temperament, impossible to break.

Mustangs have been both romanticized as symbols of frontier freedom and managed as nuisance animals competing with livestock for rangeland. (Capitalized Mustang is the Ford sports car.)
