lariat

Cowpoke's catching loop

A lariat is a rope with a running noose at one end, used to catch horses and cattle.

The term is interchangeable with lasso, though lariat emphasizes the rope itself while lasso often emphasizes the act of throwing: He coiled the lariat and hung it on his saddle.

Cowboys use lariats for roping livestock and tethering horses.
