bucking

Arched back jump

Bucking is the action of a horse or similar animal jumping with an arched back and stiff legs, trying to throw off a rider: The bronco was bucking wildly.

Extended to machinery, bucking describes jerky, uncontrolled movement: The engine kept bucking.

To be bucking something is to resist or oppose it: bucking the system, bucking the trend.

In forestry, bucking means cutting felled trees into logs.
