range
Where cattle graze
The noun and verb range always implies an extent, possibly in space but more often figuratively, in which there are different locations or values.
Many ranges are specifically limited: The range of prices was surprisingly low. Values ranged from -7 to 3.5.
People often use range when there is no strict relation or scalar quality among items named and they could just as easily use number or a similar word: We have quite a range of dining choices.
Physical things designated as ranges are either mountain groups (the Sangre de Cristo range), or an open area for animal grazing.
In American English, a kitchen cooking appliance is also called a range.
