bridle

Bit and reins

A bridle is the headgear used to control a horse, consisting of straps, bit, and reins.

The rider uses it to direct the animal's movement.

To bridle a horse is to put this gear on.

Figuratively, to bridle something is to restrain or control it: She bridled her temper.

To bridle at something is to react with indignation, like a horse jerking its head back: He bridled at the suggestion that he'd cheated.
