norteño
Toward the pole
Norteño is a style of Mexican folk music originating in northern Mexico, characterized by accordion, bajo sexto guitar, and polka rhythms influenced by German and Czech immigrants.
The term means "northern" in Spanish and describes both the music and people from Mexico's northern regions: a norteño band played at the wedding.
In the United States, Norteños are also a California prison gang associated with northern California Hispanic inmates, rivals to the southern-based Sureños.
