mare

Stallion's female counterpart

A mare is an adult female horse, typically four years or older.

The term extends to females of related animals: zebras, donkeys, mules.

In horse breeding and racing, a mare's lineage matters as much as a stallion's: The mare produced three Kentucky Derby winners.

Separately, mare appears in nightmare, from an Old English word for an evil spirit thought to suffocate sleepers.
