pickup man
Bronc rider's backup
A pickup man is a rodeo worker on horseback who helps riders dismount safely from bucking horses or bulls.
After the ride ends or the rider is thrown, pickup men move alongside to catch the competitor and guide the animal away from danger.
The job requires exceptional horsemanship and quick reflexes: The pickup man swept in just as the bronc started spinning.
