vaqueros

Spanish cattle herders

Vaqueros are cattle herders in the Spanish and Mexican ranching tradition—the original cowboys of the Americas.

Spanish colonizers brought cattle ranching to Mexico, and vaqueros developed the horsemanship, roping techniques, and gear that American cowboys later adopted.

The word comes from Spanish *vaca* (cow).

The vaqueros drove the herd north across the border.
