bronco

Untamed Western horse

A bronco is an untrained or half-wild horse, especially one prone to bucking.

The word comes from Spanish and is associated with the American West, where breaking broncos was essential ranch work.

Bronco busting—riding an unbroken horse until it accepts a rider—became a staple of rodeo competition.

The term occasionally applies to any spirited, unruly horse.
