sukkah

Temporary harvest shelter

A sukkah is a temporary hut built for the Jewish festival of Sukkot, which commemorates the Israelites' forty years of wandering in the desert.

The structure has walls but a roof of branches or leaves through which the sky remains visible.

Families eat meals in the sukkah during the week-long autumn holiday, and some sleep there.

Also spelled succah or sukka; plural sukkot or sukkahs.
