trust
Belief in reliability
Trust is confidence that something or someone is reliable and honest.
This core meaning gives rise to other meanings, like a charitable trust or investment trust, both of which handle money devoted to charity or investment.
Trust may also refer negatively to a cartel, that is, a group of companies that cooperate to limit competition.
To trust someone is to judge them dependable and to rely on them.
To trust something abstract means that you think it dependable: I’ve learned to trust my instincts.
