stalks
Hunts with patience
Stalks is the plural of stalk, which has two distinct meanings from different origins.
One stalk is the main stem of a plant, or a slender supporting structure: celery stalks, the stalk of a wineglass.
The other stalk is a verb meaning to pursue prey or a person stealthily, often with sinister intent: The detective stalked the suspect for weeks.
A person who stalks another obsessively and threateningly is a stalker.
To stalk can also mean to walk stiffly or haughtily: She stalked out of the room in anger.
