beit midrash
Jewish learning space
A beit midrash is a Jewish house of study, a space dedicated to learning and interpreting sacred texts.
Unlike a synagogue, which centers on prayer, the beit midrash emphasizes Torah study and rabbinical discussion—though the two functions often share the same building.
The term is Hebrew, literally "house of interpretation." Students gathered in the beit midrash to debate Talmudic passages.
