Kiddush

Post-service social gathering

Kiddush is the Jewish blessing recited over wine to sanctify Shabbat or a holiday.

The ceremony typically opens the festive meal on Friday evening and Saturday midday: We gathered around the table for Kiddush.

By extension, kiddush refers to the light refreshments served after synagogue services: Stay for kiddush—there's herring and cake.
