Torah scrolls
Synagogue's holy texts
Torah scrolls are handwritten copies of the first five books of the Hebrew Bible, inscribed on parchment and wound around wooden rollers.
They are the most sacred objects in Jewish worship, housed in synagogue arks and read aloud during services.
The scrolls must be copied by trained scribes following exacting rules—any error can render the scroll unfit for ritual use.
The congregation rose as the Torah scrolls were removed from the ark.
