shul

Sabbath worship site

Shul is a Yiddish word for a Jewish house of worship, synonymous with synagogue.

The term is used primarily by Ashkenazi Jews and carries a warm, familiar connotation that synagogue sometimes lacks.

We go to shul every Saturday morning.

In casual conversation, shul often implies not just the building but the community that gathers there.
