property

Attribute or estate

In general, property is of two kinds.

One is inseparable from what it is associated with: Describe the properties of magnesium.

The other is closely associated with a person or other entity, but by means of ownership or control, and so is subject to removal or dissociation: They own a property in the Bahamas. The lawsuit is about intellectual property. Their property was confiscated at the border.

When property comes before another noun, it usually creates a compound that refers to real estate: property developer, property market.

The word prop, used in movies and plays, is a short form of property.
