sod house
Turf-walled shelter
A sod house is a dwelling built from strips of grass-covered earth, stacked like bricks with the roots binding the soil together.
Settlers on the American Great Plains built sod houses—also called soddies—where timber was scarce but prairie grass abundant.
The thick walls provided good insulation but leaked during heavy rains: They spent their first winter in a sod house on the Nebraska prairie.
