barnraising
Neighbors building together
A barnraising is a communal event where neighbors gather to build a barn together, traditionally associated with Amish and rural American communities.
The term extends to any collaborative effort where people voluntarily pool labor for a shared goal: The open-source project was a kind of digital barnraising.
Also spelled barn raising or barn-raising.
