run-up
Before the jump
A run-up is the period of time leading up to an event, especially one involving preparation or increasing activity: In the run-up to the election, both candidates intensified their campaigning.
In British English, it also refers to a rapid increase, particularly in prices or costs.
In sports like cricket and track and field, a run-up is the approach an athlete takes before bowling, jumping, or throwing—building momentum before the main action.
