polls

Where ballots go

Polls are surveys measuring public opinion, especially about political candidates or issues: The polls show a tight race.

A poll is also a place where votes are cast—go to the polls means to vote.

The verb poll means to survey or receive votes: She polled well among young voters.

As a singular noun, poll can mean the head, surviving mainly in combinations like poll tax (a per-head tax).
