batsman
Wicket's defending player
A batsman is the player at bat in cricket, the one facing the bowler and attempting to score runs.
The term is specific to cricket and related bat-and-ball games; baseball uses *batter* instead.
The batsman defended his wicket for three hours.
The gender-neutral *batter* is gaining ground in cricket as well.
