rehearsal

Trial before performance

A rehearsal is a practice session before a performance or event.

Actors rehearse plays, musicians rehearse concerts, couples rehearse wedding ceremonies.

The word implies preparation for something that will happen formally later: We have dress rehearsal tomorrow.

By extension, any preliminary run-through can be a rehearsal: The meeting was just a rehearsal for the real negotiation.
