spot kick

Penalty area shot

A spot kick is a penalty kick in soccer, so called because the ball is placed on a designated spot twelve yards from the goal line.

The term is more common in British English than American English, where penalty kick or simply penalty predominates.

The referee awarded a spot kick after the defender's handball in the box.
