tidal wave
Massive coastal surge
A tidal wave is an unusually large ocean wave, especially one caused by an earthquake or underwater disturbance—technically called a tsunami.
Despite the name, tidal waves have nothing to do with tides.
Figuratively, a tidal wave is any overwhelming surge: a tidal wave of emotion, a tidal wave of support for the candidate.
