tidal waves

Massive sea swells

Tidal waves are large, destructive ocean waves, especially those caused by underwater earthquakes or volcanic activity—technically called tsunamis.

The term is imprecise since these waves have nothing to do with tides.

Figuratively, a tidal wave is any overwhelming surge: a tidal wave of public support, a tidal wave of refugees.
